Jeff Reichard, system executive director for acute care and supply chain pharmacy services at UNC Health, points to his experience during Hurricane Helene as an example of why he got into healthcare — and what he loves about his job.

In the immediate aftermath of the storm, Wi-Fi was down throughout western North Carolina, making coordination in the area difficult. Reichard moved quickly, making calls to secure Starlink units — which provide internet access via satellite — to restore Wi-Fi connectivity at regional command centers while also leading his team’s efforts to source and distribute critical fluids for patients.

“It’s pretty amazing to be able to help patients and support communities through our work,” Reichard says.

That commitment to community — and making a tangible impact — extends beyond his role at UNC Health. As board treasurer for WakeEd Partnerships, a nonprofit that brings together organizations and leaders to strengthen Wake County Public Schools, Reichard works to create that same meaningful impact.

“For me, board work has to be fulfilling and aligned with what matters most to you,” he says. “Public education is important to me because my kids are in public schools — but it’s also important for the health of our communities. The programs WakeEd offers are truly impactful, truly make a difference, whether it’s providing classroom supplies, supporting reading initiatives or investing in teacher development.”

As board treasurer, Reichard helps ensure funding and resources for programs that support Wake County teachers and students. He also champions collaboration. Since 2022, WakeEd has collected more than $2 million in school supplies, helping ease the financial burden on teachers — with annual support from UNC Health.

“I got into healthcare because it’s a way to benefit your community. We do that by caring for patients,” Reichard says. “Board work gives you another way to use your skills to serve your community — and I’m grateful for that opportunity.”
